Defensive Errors Cost the Game
Lying in 9th place and with 12 points Warminster Town travelled to Wincanton Town who were lying in 17th place with 4 points at the start of the day. On paper and with some good past performances many might assume an away victory. It’s always wise though not to assume. The home side after a goalless first half came away as 3 - 1 victors. The weather was certainly different to the previous very wet Saturday afternoon at Bishop Sutton. The pitch looked good especially bathed in the warm bright sunshine.
Wincanton looked dangerous from the start but apparently having their worst start to a season looked a little nervy. Warminster had some good opening chances and made several attempts on goal. In the 13th minute a ball cleared by the keeper was met by Harry Barnes and put it into the back of the net, sadly it was ruled offside.
The second half kicked off in the continuous warm sunshine. In less than 2 minutes there was a goalmouth scramble and Warminster failed to clear resulting in Luke Woodland putting the home side ahead. Wincanton now had there confidence restored and continued to exert pressure and almost got a second in the 23rd minute which was somehow cleared off the goal line.
On 60 minutes good work down the left from Warminster’s Harry Barnes led to him crossing the ball into the 6-yard box and the ball was then poked home by Jack Miluk to make it one all. The lead didn’t last long as due to poor marking a home side free kick on the left found an unmarked Luke Woodland on the right-hand edge of the penalty area who scored his second on 64 minutes. Wincanton made it 3 when in a similar position Woodland received the ball and passed it to Dan Wise running past him on his right who then cut in and scored. Sadly the Warminster defence made it rather easy for the home side to score.
Warminster Town have their first home game for over a month on Saturday, October 6th when they welcome Ashton & Backwell to Weymouth Steet. Kickoff is 3:00 pm.
